Chapter Seventeen

“Very interesting, Professor Drake said as they pushed through the crowd. He watched Lewis for a few moments, then held out the cane “Captain—you look as if you need this.” Lewis took it gratefully. His leg throbbed from kneeling in the Vistanas wagon.

Lewis had related the tale of his tarokka reading and what he had learned from Madame Catalena as they strode through the busy street, moving steadily away from the wagons and toward the Mists. He saw no change in Drake’s expression when he suggested that some of the Vistani might be inadvertently, or purposefully, aiding their enemy.

“Clearly, we can expect no further help from them.” The gypsies’ unwillingness to help weighed heavily upon Lewis.

“At least we can be assured that they will not aid Lucius Knight in his plans for us.” The professor frowned, despite his optimistic statement “Not more than their agreement requires, at any rate. But I fail to understand—if they can pass through the Mists, why will they not aid us in our escape? It seems an unfair agreement, to let people die in exchange for the right to trade here.”

“Perhaps they will offer assistance when I fulfill whatever purpose they believe I have here. Beyond that, I do not think they will be forthcoming with any additional information.” Lewis moved to avoid a youth in dirt-smeared trousers who stood near several boxes, his shoe shine cloth held at the ready.

“Do you have any inkling of what this purpose might be?” The professor did not look at him, and Lewis wondered if the evasion was intentional.

“No,” Lewis said, deciding to trust Drake for the friend he was. “As far as I am concerned, my raison d’étre is to kill the Snake, set Elise free, and escape from this place, but that hardly seems like the purpose Madame Catalena hinted at.” Lewis was still frustrated by the fortune teller’s ambiguous talk. “I do not know, but I fear I shall learn the truth of it soon. Perhaps before it is too late.”

“That does seem likely.” The professor paused and glanced around before he finally settled his attention back on Lewis. “There is something I find difficult to believe in all of this.”

“Just one thing?” The sarcasm was unmistakable.

“Indeed. I find this notion that Lucius Knight could have influenced this Bailey fellow, and perhaps the rest of us, to board our fateful train, quite impossible to believe.” The professor’s speech was labored as they maneuvered through the crowd. “If he does not control the Mists, how could he have known our journey would end in Mithras Court?” He frowned. “Yet the idea that it could be fate is even more ludicrous.”

“I agree. Neither theory seems believable. Then again, nothing about Mithras Court made sense. They walked through a nightmare, but they could not deny that they were there. It was not some sort of shared hallucination—it had to be real, yet it could not be. Elise, he added to himself, was another facet of this mystery.
